Cardhu
12 Year Old
Speyside Single Malt

Tasting Notes:

Matured for twelve years in old oak casks, this full flavoured malt contains aromas of ripe pears and fragrant mixed fruit.  It is nicely balanced on the palate, with a pleasing sweet smoothness and a crisp apple finish.

Jura
16 Year Old Island Single Malt

Picture
Tasting Notes:

George Orwell  wrote 1984 on Jura, and I can easily imagine him sipping this exquisite whisky as he tapped away at his typewriter.

This sixteen year old is a rich golden colour, and lightly aromatic on the nose. On the palate it has strong butter notes with just a hint of oranges and spices. This luxurious malt leaves a long honey and toffee finish.

An Island malt that tastes like a Speyside.

The Balvenie
Doublewood
12 Year Old Single Malt
(Speyside)

Picture

Tasting Notes:

William Grant first distilled whisky at Balvenie’s Dufftown distillery in 1893. Since then the distillery has produced premium quality whisky, which consistently performs well in international competition.

DoubleWood is a full-bodied whisky, which has been matured in sherry and oak casks.

Vanilla, nuts and spice feature on the nose, while soft fruit, sherry, cinnamon and peat tantalise the palate. The long luxurious finish is dry and spicy.

Auchentoshan
Three Wood
10 Year Old Lowland Single Malt

Picture

Tasting Notes:

The only Scottish single malt that is triple distilled.  It is matured in American Bourbon oak casks and finished in Spanish sherry casks.

The result is a whisky rich with dark fruits, butterscotch and roasted hazlenuts, which is smooth and delicate.

Bowmore
Enigma
12 Year Old Island Single Malt
(Islay)

Picture

Enigma has a deep bronze colour, with smoke, sweet sherry, and heather honey on the nose.

The palate opens with sweet sherry flavours, followed by robust smokiness and a garnish of fresh lemon zest.  The finish is sweat peat smoke with a hint of salt.

Brilliant!

Laphroaig
10 Year Old Island Single Malt
(Islay)

Picture

Laphroaig (Gaelic: "The beautiful hollow by the broad bay") has its own peat-beds on Islay and a beautifully-maintained floor maltings at the distillery. Its maturation warehouses face directly on to the sea.

The distillery was built in the 1820s by Donald and Alex Johnston whose family name is still on the label. In 1847 Donald died two days after falling into a vat of partially-made whisky.

Apparently during the American prohibition on alcohol the US government stopped the importation of Scotch.  However some of the most phenolic stuff (ie Laphroaig) managed to slip through the net. It was being imported for medicinal purposes only.

This malt is the Islay with the strongest character.  It tastes of iodine, peat and the sea. You either love it or you hate it.

Saffron Lights

Saffron Lights

When saffron lights are shining,

In my Edinburgh cut glass,

I know it’s time to ponder good,

And eliminate the crass,

To envision all that’s fine out there,

To be a hypocrite to class.

The sheen is not quite rose coloured,

Though it has the same effect,

It blinds you to reality,

Falsely makes you feel select,

But escape is not a bad thing,

It’s good to feel perfect.
